Switzerland- Hotel Bellevue Terminus

January 2019

From the moment the flight confirmation email hit my inbox, I had the biggest smile on my face for weeks! I hadn’t booked the hotel as of yet, but knew just by looking at pictures, this was the place! For Christmas my plan was take my Mum away to somewhere quiet, picturesque and most importantly somewhere completly new for us both.

I chose a gorgeous alpine town in central Switzerland named Engelberg. It was just 2 hours by train from Zurich airport, stopping at another city Luzern half way through.

Searching for authentic Swiss hotels, I came across Bellevue Terminus, situated in the heart of Engelberg, seconds from the train station. Online it looked traditional on the outside yet modern and quirky on the inside. I can say my expectations were met & it was just that!

We walked through the early 20th century doors, welcomed by a grand chandelier leading us to check in. The reception desk was positioned in what they call ‘The Living Room’ introducing you to the homely feel of the hotel as soon as you arrive.

Each table was decorated with flowers and lit candles, from breakfast all the way until bar closing at midnight. The interior had a shabby chic feel throughout with the old features shining through. In the centre of the room was an old log burning fire, warming up the entire downstairs, just what’s needed after hours of skiing.

We made our way upstairs to our room, overwhelmed by the immediate view directly out of our window. Outside the balcony doors we realised we were enclosed in the Swiss Alps, just beneath Mount Titlis.

The bedroom was spacious yet cosy with high ceilings and fluffy blankets at the end of the bed. The bathroom was open plan with a walk in shower and sliding door, complimented with provided shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel. On the wall was a flatscreen tv with worldwide channels, and a safe for all valuables.

We went to explore the hotel a little before heading out into Engelberg. Downstairs was a very girly ‘Instagrammable’ bathroom which of course we got very excited over! Pale pink walls, light features hanging from the ceiling, little mirrors and plants inside, accompanied by hair spray for that extra hair fix in the snow!

Hotel Bellevue is located in the perfect place to explore the little town or the mountains, which made life so much easier for us not knowing where anything was. We spent the afternoon wondering around Engelberg, looking in the Swiss shops, booking ski lessons for the following day and stopping off multiple times for hot chocolate!

Before travelling to Engelberg I researched good restaurants/bars for the evenings, and Yukatan which was actually part of our hotel kept appearing at the top of the list. Yukatan is a popular apres-ski destination serving cocktails, beers, a huge food selection and proudly a live band every night. Of course we went back the following night after thoroughly enjoying our first visit.

Waking up the next morning to the beautiful view of mount Titlis was breathtaking to say the least. It was a photo opportunity of course, although the photos show just half of how picturesque it actually is.

Sitting down for breakfast in the Living Room, was cosy and perfect. With the fire going and snow falling outside, nothing could compare in that moment. The selection of breakfast items were set out in a buffet style, hot dishes in Le Creuset dishes, cheese and charcuterie served with chutneys, croissants and breads, cereals and fresh fruit next to a selection of milks for the non dairy drinkers like myself. For hot drinks they had two coffee machines serving lattes, cappuccinos, hot chocolate, the lot, with a selection of teas too.

It was time to ski! Strategy planned, the bus we needed to catch to take us up the mountain was just across the road from the hotel entrance. Making it an added bonus to our trip with the minus temperatures outside.

All in all we will most definitely be revisiting Hotel Bellevue. It was just perfect for a weekend away in the mountains if you want to escape your busy life in the city.
